PAThese muscle movement patterns really clued us in that something bigger was happening. It was more than just a sprain. At first the spasms stayed in my quad. But then my foot kept having clonus when we tried to move it. My hand was twitchy. My whole body would thrust into extension or spasm. It wasn’t normal despite what my original orthopedic provider told us. It limited PT. The word that changed everything and made it all make sense was, Dystonia. Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle movements. Dystonia causes thrusting, full body spasms, and posturing. Spasticity is what causes the clonus and quad spasms. All of this is caused by the brain making the muscles “tone” too high. A normal person can move freely. But not too floppy and not too tight. A person with neurological disorders often get way too tight and the muscles overpowered us. My muscle tone is due to a progressive motor neuron disease.
