MYOne parent one language or OPOL, has been our method with all of the girls. Primarily because we don’t have another option. Nick doesn’t know Spanish and if we want them to learn the language it has to come from me. This is exactly how I was raised, but in reverse. When we lived in Mexico City, my mom didn’t know a lick of Spanish. So I spoke English with her and Spanish with everyone else. She would take me to the market and use me to help translate for her! I went to school and only spoke Spanish (well also Hebrew), and would speak English at home with my mom.
My mom eventually learned because, especially back then, no one spoke Englihs in Mexico. We didn’t even get any American TV for a while so literally everything was in Spanish (much different than it is today). Point being that it works.
But also, it doesn’t work for everyone and you have to do what feels right for you and your family. And also it’s completely ok to not be perfect. In fact, I doubt that when we were in Mexico my mom was worried about me learning or not learning English as much as I worry about the twins learning Spanish and here I am. So do you, teach as little or as much as you want to and remember that kids are so much more attentive and so much more intuitive than we give them credit for! **and take advantage of all the cool things we have now! (TV Spanish, music, books, immersion schools). Questions? lmk what you think

In the context of identity Hispanic describes people who come from a primarily Spanish-speaking country like Spain, and all the nations that Spain colonized.
Latino refers to people from Latin America, and comes from a shortening of the Spanish word Latinoamericano. Latin America consists of Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean Islands.
You can be Hispanic and Latino, Hispanic and not Latino, or Latino and not Hispanic.
These terms may seem simple, but they represent the diverse identities and experiences of millions of people.
So, understanding and using them correctly is one of many steps we can take to show respect.
