The story behind the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is one of hope, bipartisanship, and the amplification of the voices of those affected by HIV and AIDS. Twenty years ago, HIV and AIDS were running rampant throughout parts of Africa and orphaning an entire generation in vulnerable communities. Seeing the devastating impact, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went to President George W. Bush and asked him how the U.S. could help. The president and his administration worked hand-in-hand with a Democratically controlled Congress to come up with a bold, bipartisan plan to curb the AIDS epidemic. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), the chair of the Appropriations Committee, appeared skeptical on Wednesday of the Trump administration’s proposal to claw back $9.4 billion in already approved funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting. She said she was particularly concerned about the request to cut $400 million in funding for PEPFAR, the AIDS-fighting program that has saved more than 26 million lives since being launched in 2003 under President George W. Bush. “Cutting funding now — funding that is aimed at preventing disease transmission — would be extraordinarily ill-advised and shortsighted,” she said. She also questioned the cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), noting the vast majority of the funding flows to local television and radio shows. “I understand, however, the concern about subsidizing the national radio news programming that for years has had a discernibly partisan bent,” she said, referring to NPR, which received funding from the CPB. “There are, however, more targeted approaches to addressing that bias at NPR than rescinding all of the funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.” Watch more by tapping the link in our bio. #susancollins #senate #pepfar #cspan
