MRIn the early 1980s, Dubai wanted its own airline. At that time, Gulf Air, which served Dubai, had cut back its flights to the city. Dubai didn’t want to depend on anyone else for air travel, so Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum decided to launch Emirates.
But there was a big problem: Dubai had no planes, no pilots, and no airline experience. They had the vision, but not the resources.
This is where Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) stepped in. PIA played a crucial role in getting Emirates off the ground: they leased two aircraft — a Boeing 737 and an Airbus A300 — and provided pilots, cabin crew, maintenance support, and training for Emirates’ first staff. Thanks to PIA, Emirates’ first flight took off from Dubai to Karachi in 1985. What started as a humble venture with Pakistani expertise and borrowed planes grew into one of the world’s most successful and luxurious airlines, and the rest is history.
