COThe paisley motif, often referred to as the “Eastern cucumber,” is one of the most ancient ornamental forms in Eastern textile traditions. Its distinctive curved shape, resembling a drop or a seed, has long symbolized life, growth, fertility, and the continuous movement of energy. This motif appears in Persian, Indian, and Ottoman textiles, traveling through centuries as a sign of a rich decorative heritage.
In my work, I turn to this historical symbol and reinterpret it in a contemporary context. Red ornaments placed on bright blue and black backgrounds, as well as black ornaments on a red background, create a strong graphic rhythm. These bold color contrasts give the traditional motif a new visual presence — expressive, dynamic, and distinctly contemporary.
Through this approach, an ancient ornamental symbol continues its life, transforming from a historical pattern into a modern artistic language within textile and wearable art. 🎨
