This introduction to samba de gafieira is perfect for tango dancers and those who enjoy Brazilian music. We’ll walk you step-by-step through the fundamentals of this classic Brazilian partner dance.
In this class series, we’ll
focus on the essence of samba de gafieira- rhythm, connection, and ginga.
What you’ll learn (Level 1):
Foundational steps, basic turns, and how to start moving around the dance floor.
After completing this intro series, students will have the option to advance to the Level 1.5 class in April.

Transitional steps and introduction to circular movements
What is samba de gafieira?
Samba de gafieira is a vibrant and dynamic partner dance that originated in early 20th century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The dance emerged from rhythms of African origin, such as lundu and batuque and shares a history with other Afro-Brazilian dances. Samba de gafieira can be danced to various types of music, such as bossa nova, choro, MPB (“Música Popular Brasileira”), pagode, samba-funk and others. Like tango, it is a walking dance characterized by a close embrace.
