And I think it’s okay that I can’t find the perfect word for it. I also think language matters. “Commit” carries the weight of crime and shame. And “choice” can carry a kind of blame that survivors end up holding in their bodies for years. My husband died by suicide. He died. If you’re a survivor of suicide loss and you know exactly what I mean, I hope this makes you feel less alone. If you’ve never been close to this kind of grief, I hope it grows your compassion. Suicide loss is complex and the people left behind deserve gentleness, not judgment.
