CRDavid Gilmour’s “Comfortably Numb” Solo (Live at Pompeii, 2016) is a masterclass in “Emotional Sustain.” An interesting fact is that Gilmour returned to this venue 45 years after Pink Floyd’s legendary 1971 film, making him the only performer to play for an audience in the amphitheatre since the time of the gladiators.
While the original 1979 studio version is “suave” and iconic, the Pompeii solo is an “Authentic Brilliance” odyssey, a five-minute display of blues-rock phrasing that defies logic.
