Happy Pi Day! 🥧 Comment “Pi” for the full video! Today we’re looking away at arcs and focusing on approximating pi using lines… or more specifically, polygons! Archimedes approximated pi by comparing a circle to regular polygons drawn inside it and around it. The polygon inside the circle had a perimeter smaller than the circle’s circumference, while the polygon outside had a perimeter larger than the circumference. By calculating both perimeters and then increasing the number of sides, he was able to squeeze the true value of pi between two increasingly close limits. Using this geometric method with a 96-sided polygon, he showed that pi lay between 223/71 and 22/7. This is just one way of calculating pi!
