I’ve had days where I’ve seen a lack of improvement in some of my patients and doubted myself as a result. I’ve had days when I’ve left work wondering why I came into this profession. This has sometimes led me to wonder whether I’m qualified to do the work I do as a psych NP. But qualification isn’t just about titles or the number of letters after your name. It’s about the depth of knowledge, the commitment to learning, and the ability to apply that knowledge with empathy and skill. It’s also about the outcomes we achieve, collectively as a profession and individual as providers in our practice treating our patients. Are we only defined by formal credentials, or do we also demonstrate our qualifications through our actions and dedication? Can someone’s impact be measured solely by their professional background, or is it their ability to connect with and support patients that truly defines their expertise? True qualification is a blend of education, experience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in patient care. Here's what she did differently 👇 She DIDN'T quit her job right after getting her NP license. She built the practice on the side: ✅ Outpatient contracts ✅ Part-time facility work ✅ Multiple income streams It was a gradual build. And here's the part that surprised me most: She had Zero marketing. No ads. No social media campaigns. It was 100% word of mouth. She does great work. Collaborates with providers for referrals. Even though my bedroom was big enough for a desk, and I lived with roommates at the time—seeing patients in the same room where I slept was terrible! I wish I had given myself a separate space sooner. I wish I knew it was reasonable to ask for scheduled weekly consultation. “Just reach out if you need something” sounded supportive — but in practice, I felt like a burden and never knew when to reach out. I wish I had set boundaries earlier. Clear expectations around messaging between appointments, specifically 🥲 Clear limits before burnout taught me the hard way. I wish I understood the nuances of documentation — the small details that matter when it comes to insurance and clawbacks. I wish I understood reimbursement sooner. And I really wish I had known to form an LLC earlier as a 1099 — and how much difference the right accountant can make 😬 We all figure it out eventually — but community makes the figuring out part gentler, faster, and a lot less lonely🫶 #pmhnp #psychnp

Becoming a psych NP at a school and working as a RN treating MAINLY my own people as patients taught me that sometimes we go unheard and ignored. It’s ok to not be ok.
