ALQuantitative trading is a methodical puzzle.
This intraday trading system focuses on Nasdaq futures, and deploys multiple models to generate alpha. It is a long/short system, and excels in trending environments. It is a positive skew trading system as indicated by the skew value on the right hand side of the frame.
The strategy first establishes a volatility-scaled base position using multiple independent signal models. As price continues to move consistently in the same direction, the position is pyramided (hence the name “Cairo”) by incrementally increasing exposure at predefined persistence thresholds without exceeding the global risk budget structure. This is expressed mathematically at the center of the frame.
The model has ran live since March of 2025 on over $8,000,000 of capital on the AlgoExchange platform.
The performance shown here is simulated, with a large majority of the dataset being out of sample, and significantly outperforming the S&P 500 buy and hold return.

THI was rejected over 99% of the time. It is never an odds game. I had 0 experience with computer science or data science before college. And yet, I was still able to break into quant trading.
Here are the 3 largest takeaways you need to know.
1. Volume beats perfection
Freshman spring, with no computer science experience, I applied to 500 internships, and I was ghosted or rejected 495 times. But yes, that means I squeezed out 5 offers. They all hit my inbox in the last week of the semester. The math hurts, but just send the application before you feel “ready.” Every no sharpens the next yes. Never let someone’s “no” deter you from your dreams.
Just keep going. I’d rather regret having tried for something than regret not trying for it at all. What about you?
2. Show up every single day
You don’t have to run a marathon every day, but you have to show up. You have to keep going. 1 more coffee chat. 1 more application. 1 more cold email. Don’t be afraid. Just ask. Soon enough, you’ll have thousands of connections and people pushing for you into places you never knew you could get into. That’s how I beat the odds and got the sub-1% opportunity of working at SIG.
Send that message. You never know where it will take you.
3. Skillmax
Two classes flipped the odds in my favor, Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes. These are the most important classes you absolutely must take to break into quant trading. The must read is “A Practical Guide to Quantitative Finance Interviews” by Xinfeng Zhou (Green Book). Study the probability theory and stochastics sections. Some of my other favorites are:
• Option Volatility and Pricing
• Options, Futures and Other Derivatives
• Superforecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction
Learn things that you are actually interested in. You will go further by pursuing what YOU are interested in, not what you think OTHERS are interested in.

VIWhy quants never trust their covariance matrix ?
Most portfolio optimization models rely on the covariance matrix.
500 stocks = 125,000 parameters to estimate from only 252 trading days. More relationships than data points. Most of what you estimate is noise.
Marchenko and Pastur (1967) showed that pure random data produces a predictable eigenvalue distribution. Overlay it on real data and you can separate signal from noise.
On S&P 500 data, only a handful of eigenvalues sit above the noise band. The rest is random fluctuation.
That’s why quants clean the matrix before optimizing, using eigenvalue clipping, shrinkage (Ledoit-Wolf), or other regularization methods. Factor models and Bayesian approaches also address the same problem.
The core idea: if you don’t question your inputs, no optimizer will save you
