ASReal Steel | Behind-The-Scenes
Real Steel was directed by Shawn Levy and produced by Steven Spielberg through DreamWorks, with distribution by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The screenplay was inspired by Richard Matheson’s short story Steel and finalized by John Gatins. Casting in 2010 brought Hugh Jackman into the lead role, joined by Dakota Goyo and Evangeline Lilly.
Filming took place primarily in Michigan, with large soundstage work used to stage the robot-boxing matches. The production built multiple animatronic robots for on-set interaction, while visual-effects companies enhanced movement and facial detail in post-production. Trade publications reported that motion-capture performers helped define the robots’ fighting styles.
The film opened in October 2011 with a reported $110 million budget and grossed about $299 million worldwide, according to Wikipedia and coverage from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
