MAOn November 5th, 2002, 10 months before his death, Johnny Cash released what many consider to be the greatest cover song of all time due to an unlikely cascade of events
In the early 90’s, Johnny Cash, 20 years removed from the prime of his career, began to record songs with the ‘American Recordings’ record label. With the help of the labels founder, Rick Rubin, Cash began recording whatever he desired- mostly covers- and releasing them in albums every few years.
One song on the fourth of these albums was a cover of ‘Hurt’ by the Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor, the frontman of the Nine Inch Nails, was asked for permission to record the cover. Reznor was skeptical but said yes because of Cash’s legendary stature.
Months after the song was released, Cash would die after decades of health issues and ‘Hurt’ went on to be recognized as one of his greatest songs and one of the greatest covers of all time.
