SOHappy Wednesday, Everyone.
I'd love your thoughts. I know most, if not all of us, realize that addiction and recovery aren't as easily explained as this quote would suggest. But from experience, I also know that many people outside the recovery community think it is.
Alcohol wasn't just a drink for me. It was what it represented. When I gave it up, I had to completely change my way of living. I was not just giving up a toxic, addictive drug, I was giving up comfort, familiarity, and the only coping skill I had.
When I was finally able to put the bottle down, everything didn't magically change. It still hasn't. Removing alcohol has given me the opportunity and potential to do things I wouldn't be able to do if I was still drinking, but it has taken time and work to get there.
If you are beginning your journey this dry July, please be patient with yourself. If you have been on this journey for a while and are struggling, please remember that healing takes time. This is not a linear path. It's not black and white. It's all the gray in between that nobody sees that can challenge us the most.
