CQWhy do bearded dragons wave? 🫣
I’m currently babysitting Bronte’s Diablo bearded dragon, and she is an absolute peach. While I was in the reptile room, I caught her displaying this little “wave”, and it’s one of those behaviours that’s often misunderstood.
Bearded dragon waving is a submissive, non-threatening signal. It’s a form of communication used to say “I see you, and I’m not a threat.”
You’ll most commonly see this in juveniles, because they’re still learning their environment, assessing size differences, and navigating social cues.
Young dragons will often wave:
• When they see a larger animal
• When introduced to a new environment
• When they spot movement or another reptile nearby
• During moments of mild uncertainty
In this case, my pygmy bearded dragon was in his enclosure nearby, looking over at this little red girl. From her perspective, she’s the smaller dragon in the room, so waving is a calm way of acknowledging another presence without escalating into defensive behaviour.
This isn’t a trick.
It isn’t affection.
And it isn’t fear in the way we often think of fear.
It’s simply communication, a normal, healthy behaviour that shows awareness and social processing, especially in young dragons.
And yes… she’s waving, she’s tiny, and she’s dangerously cute, but don’t worry, Bronte, I promise I’ll give her back 😅🧡

The opera scene serves as a quiet warning. Before a single act of violence is shown, the audience understands that Hannibal Lecter is dangerous not because he lacks control, but because he possesses it in excess.
