Inside this flower is something worth as much as gold. It’s called the crocus sativus flower, and it blooms for only about two weeks each year.
During that short time, it grows three tiny red threads, which workers carefully collect one by one from hundreds of flowers — because it takes around 75,000 flowers to get just one pound.
So why go through all that effort? Because one pound is worth over $5,000. After these threads, called saffron, are dried, they become something much more than a spice. Even a small amount added to food not only gives a rich flavor, but has also been shown to boost happiness — which is why it’s often called red gold.
