Every time light enters a new medium, it changes direction — this is called refraction. How much it bends depends on the refractive indices of the two media involved. In this experiment, light coming from the coloured parts of the flower is refracted twice: first when it passes from the plastic bag into the water, and again when it travels from the water back into the air. As a result, the refracted light no longer reaches our eyes when we look from above the beaker, so the colours appear to disappear. Why doesn’t the black outline vanish as well? The black outline is drawn on the outside of the bag and absorbs almost all incident light, reflecting very little. Since there is almost no reflected light to be redirected by refraction, the black outline remains visible. #science #stem #stemeducationforkids #physics #physicsstudent

It’s all about light and refraction! Both Pyrex glass and vegetable oil have a similar refractive index of around 1.47. This means they bend light in almost the same way. When immersed in vegetable oil, the glass and oil effectively "match," making the glass less visible because light doesn’t change direction as it passes through.
