The deadline to implement the system is in December of this year. Previously, men were required to register themselves for the draft when they turned 18. Failure to do so was considered a felony and carried potential financial fines and even prison time. In 40 states, it also limited their ability to receive a driver’s license. Opponents of automatic registration believe allowing the Selective Service System to access other government databases is an invasion of privacy. The system may also automatically register men who are ineligible to serve, like those with certain disabilities.
