A Good Samaritan alerted us, and when we arrived, we found a frightened, emaciated pup with a mangled hind leg — the result of a hit-and-run motorcycle accident. The injury was severe: a shattered femur, multiple abrasions, and signs of older untreated wounds that hinted at a harsh, neglected life. 💔 We rushed Rocky to our partner vet clinic, where x-rays confirmed our worst fears: he would need an emergency orthopedic surgery or risk losing the leg entirely. Despite the odds and the cost, we said yes — because every life matters. 💉🩺🙏 The surgery was complex. Our amazing veterinary team inserted a steel pin to stabilize the broken bone and spent hours cleaning and closing infected wounds. Rocky was a fighter through it all. The first 48 hours post-surgery were critical. He was on IV fluids, antibiotics, and heavy pain meds, barely lifting his head — but slowly, hope started to shine through. 🌅 Today, Rocky is learning to walk again with controlled physio, eating full meals (with a tail wag!), and even trusting us enough for belly rubs. 💪🐾 His wounds are healing beautifully, and his personality is beginning to blossom — gentle, resilient, and so full of quiet gratitude. When Bear arrived, our vet discovered that his teeth were in very poor condition, which explained why he had struggled to chew hay and experienced a recent choking incident. His teeth hadn’t been floated in quite some time and had developed many sharp points and uneven wear that made chewing painful and difficult. Because of the extent of his dental issues, our veterinarian couldn’t complete all the necessary work in one session, so Bear will have a follow-up dental in the next few months. A huge thank-you to Dr. Michael Lyon of Large Animal Practice for always providing such excellent care to our horses and donkeys. This type of neglect resulted in Rickets. We can see it in how he walks - uncoordinated and goofy - his leg muscles atrophied. Time, diet, and LOVE will fix this (plus a cocktail of vitamins and vet visits.) 💪🏻 Dunton was once dangerously close to organ failure. He has now gained 8lbs in total (from 27lb up to 35lb today!) His personality is starting to show as he warms up to love. His story isn’t done, we will make sure he continues gaining weight and finds the best home! He is a survivor and deserves nothing but love from here on out. 🏠 DUNTON needs a new foster placement by Jan 3rd. He has some time to go before he is ready for adoption, but we are taking early applications as he is one of our most special pups.
