REZinedine Zidane Masterclass:
Zidane scored against Reggina on January 23, 2000, is frequently cited as a masterclass in balance, spatial awareness, and deceptive footwork. It wasn't a long-range blast, but rather a surgical navigation of a crowded penalty area.
The Sequence of Movement
The Approach: Zidane received a short, horizontal pass from Darko Kovačević just outside the left side of the penalty area. He took his first touch with his right foot to settle the ball while facing the goal diagonally.
The First Feint: As he entered the box, he was immediately closed down by a defender. Zidane performed a subtle "double-touch" feint, shifting his weight as if to go outside, which froze the defender and allowed him to cut back toward the center of the box.
The "Traffic" Navigation: Now inside the area, two more Reggina defenders converged on him. Zidane used a series of incredibly tight touches with the inside and outside of his right boot. He moved the ball in a "slalom" fashion, keeping it remarkably close to his feet while the defenders were unable to commit to a tackle for fear of a penalty.
The Finish: Having created a sliver of space between the defenders, he didn't wait for the ball to settle. While still moving laterally, he struck a firm, rising shot with his right foot. The ball flew into the roof of the net at the near post, leaving goalkeeper Massimo Taibi with no time to react.
Technical Analysis
The movement was characterized by low center of gravity and economy of motion. Zidane didn't use excessive speed; instead, he used the defenders' own momentum against them. By the time he shot, he had essentially "disappeared" from the markers' tactical coverage despite being only a few yards away from them.
