SHARED EXPERIENCES, FALLING IN LOVE & THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY • - My guest on the Huberman Lab podcast out now is “Dr K” Dr Alok Kanojia MD @healthygamer_gg - a medical doctor (western trained and practicing MD; psychiatrist) who is also deeply trained in eastern practices. He explains that romantic love is not dying… but it is harder to access, in part because people’s online behavior and text communications can disrupt some of the same neural pathways that romantic love and attachment require to form and be maintained. The episode covers a lot of topics, including navigating relationships in the larger context of the Internet and social media, specific practices to unlearn unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, and learning to identify the root causes of procrastination and how to overcome them. On the podcast, Dr. K makes the suggestion that people do their best to stay off their phone in the hour before dates both with new people or with your existing partner; and how the presence of the phone when you’re with someone on a date or even just with a friend or family can impede the deepening of that bond; we discussed this in the context of dopamine, signaling and more. What’s great about Dr. K is his advice is very practical, and grounded in the neuroscience and psychiatry literature. We discussed the findings that are relevant. He’s also a clinician who sees patients and he draws from that experience as well.
