THSometimes wildlife encounters occur when you least expect them. This rook flew down and started feeding alongside me recently at a motorway service station. Obviously used to the close proximity of humanity on the move, it clearly felt comfortable feeding close enough for me to observe its characteristics and behaviour in a way that I never have before.
That steep forehead, the baggy ‘trousers’ and the beautiful purplish sheen and scalloping of those feathers on a bird that from a distance often just looks black. But what intrigued me most was the way it fed. Probing the short, damp turf, prising it open to reveal worms and leatherjackets and other soil invertebrates. The way it uses its tongue and pauses as if sensing something through its beak. All of which explains that distinctive nasal bald patch that if it were feathered would very quickly become soiled. Literally.
I’ve spent a lifetime watching birds but this is the closest I’ve ever got to a rook. The ones that feed in the meadow beyond Little Orchard are wary. Those that roost high in the Henton poplars take flight at a hint of intrusion. The rookeries that are starting to become active with plumped-up nests are populated by birds largely silhouetted against cloudy skies. So this serendipitous encounter was a special one. I found myself looking and learning about a bird that has been familiar to me and yet noticing something new. And that sense of discovery is very much a part of the deep-rooted, intrinsic beauty of birding.
