KATo be honest I am so angry that my nonspeaking son has to continue to fight and prove his way of communication is valid
That he has to prove that he is capable and prove that his outsides don’t match his insides
And that he has to prove this to the Autism Community
This reel that I saw was from a speaking autistic person
One who has a job, lives independently and can communicate needs, desires, thoughts, ideas all verbally
So it was beyond frustrating to see this person talk so poorly of letterboards for our nonspeakers, calling them the “most vulnerable”
Seeing that there was so much disbelief in our nonspeakers capabilities
It’s hard as a mother, but I can’t imagine how it must feel as a nonspeaker to hear others disbelief in you
Now Hudson is not yet an open speller, meaning that he is still working on his motor to be able to communicate openly
He still needs some prompting as he builds his motor and to move purposefully
But I have no doubt that he knows how to spell and that he has his own thoughts and ideas and that he will fully communicate using letterboards
There are however many nonspeaking people who are open spellers and do fully communicate using letterboards
I have witnessed this with my own eyes and I am here to tell you that it is 100% their own words, their own thoughts and feelings
If you are a parent who is wondering if they should try letterboards via S2C with your child I encourage you strongly to just try!!!
Find a professional and give it a chance
For us, it has been nothing short of life changing
And I will continue to scream it from the rooftops

REThe @ashaweb conference starts today! So here’s a reminder that they are actively trying to discredit my daughter’s method of communication.
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is not a trend, a gimmick, or a fantasy created by desperate parents. It is a communication method grounded in motor learning, neuromotor science, and the lived experiences of countless nonspeaking autistic people who have finally been given a way to be heard. The only “controversy” surrounding S2C is the one manufactured by ASHA, an organization that has historically prioritized protecting its professional authority over listening to disabled people themselves.
ASHA’s refusal to engage with updated science, lived experience, or the disability community’s feedback doesn’t make S2C invalid. It simply reveals the limitations of an institution that has struggled to evolve alongside the people it claims to serve.
Nonspeakers deserve better.
