During college I completed a certificate in Museum Studies. One of my assignments was to sit in a museum gallery and time how long people read the labels and text panels nexts to the art works and artifacts. Do you want to guess how long most people read? A few seconds, if at all. And then I had a few people, who knew I was timing them, and they read a little longer, but not all of the information. I like to “stop and smell all the signs” and end up getting left behind anyone I bring to a musuem with me as I try to soak up all of the information. Now I do think some musuem go overboard with their text panels and basically have a thesis paper plastered to their walls, and that’s too much, also a little boring because people came to a museum to see cool stuff not read a book on a wall. I have a lot of thoughts on museum signage. Do you have any hot takes? Delphos gown, the iconic Fortuny dress 👗 The greatest success of the #Fortuny Atelier was the creation of the Delphos gown in 1909, an iconic dress and a landmark in the history of fashion. Inspired by the Ionic chiton of the Auriga, a Greek sculpture discovered in Delphi in 1896, the garment stood out for its essential shape, which gently enveloped the woman’s body and consisted of 4–5 cloths of silk satin or taffeta. A Delphos dress is meant to be stored by rolling it lengthwise and twisting it into a ball, thus preserving the pleats and keeping the shape of the garment — a very important feature that, in the early 1900s, made the Delphos dress the ideal elegant dress to pack. You can see two of them for a few more days in the ‘Entering Modernity: 1920s Fashion from the Parodi Costume Collection’ exhibition: Mariano Fortuny and Henriette Negrin, “Delphos Dress,” 1920, pleated pink silk with Murano glass buttons and stenciled belt.
