MIDuring skin cancer screening exams patients are routinely surprised when I point out a spot to them on their face when they had no idea it was there.
This patient came in for this pink spot his previous dermatologist treated with liquid nitrogen and a cream, which wasn’t going away.
This was a squamous cell carcinoma in-situ, and needed treatment.
But, this dark spot below it, it was also a squamous cell carcinoma that needs treatment as well (pigmented variant, and dermoscopy was already reviewed on my dermoscopy channel yesterday)!
And the difference here, the pink spot circled in marker was sore and irritated, and the other spot had no symptoms- like most of the skin cancers I find.
And the reason I knew both spots were cancer- because I use a dermatoscope during skin checks.
If you have a spot that’s not healing get it checked, with dermoscopy. But, also, make sure you get a skin check, because most skin cancers have no symptoms.
If this surprised you, share this message with someone you care about. It may prompt them to get a skin check.
