This girl has seen me sit in silence because of how heavy this is. She has seen me question who I am. She has seen me be brave publicly but exhausted privately. She has seen the grief of losing the old version of myself. And the frustration of this injury and the fear. And she never flinched. She’s stood beside me and reminded me who I am and has always had the belief that this isn’t the end of my story. It’s pretty wild to think that I built a career on girls backing girls and this girl is embodying that and I don’t think I’ll ever fully be able to put into words how much this girl means to me. Did you know your core and back muscles are essential for more than just movement? They play a huge role in balance, posture, and stabilizing your body during everyday tasks like sitting, standing, and reaching. When a spinal cord injury occurs, the ability to control these muscles can be impacted, making balance and posture more difficult to maintain. Because my core is weak that's what really impacts my walking as well. During the months leading up to the wedding when I was practicing so hard to walk down my wedding aisle, I actually Injured my back. My spine physically could not take the stress and weight of my body anymore. So after my wedding day I experienced the most excruciating pain I had since breaking my back... But still low-key worth it because I did it, I walked and danced at my wedding (assisted of course) your core muscles play a crucial role in stabilizing your spine. They act like a natural brace, supporting your spine and helping to keep it aligned during movement. A strong core reduces stress on your spine and can prevent injury. This stabilization is especially important for posture, balance, and movements like bending, lifting, and twisting. For individuals with spinal cord injuries, this stabilization can be affected, making it harder to maintain balance and posture. Wow, this was me 9 years ago. I needed a lot of assistance to do any form of standing and walking. Not anymore! Shout out to Lisa Krieg one of the best PTs I have ever had the privilege of working with. I was so worried I wouldn’t have a good PT to work with when I was going to school at @luthercollege located in the small town of Decorah, IA. It almost stopped me from attending school, but then here came Lisa, a God send! She worked me so hard! Just because she wasn’t highlighted in my documentary @7yardsfilm doesn’t make her any less important to my journey! #noquit Recovery update, day 780 since spinal cord injury: Before I got involved with airsports I used to be a decent wake boarder/surfer. So when @briankgrubb invited me to come ride, I jumped at the chance! I didn’t know how it would go, but I suited up anyway and jumped in the water. And well, it was a struggle… I fell multiple times just trying to get up, something that I used to do so effortlessly in the past. I was feeling a little embarrassed and getting down on myself thinking, maybe I can’t do board sports like this anymore… but eventually, I DID IT! WOW, what a feeling. You can see how much my front leg has atrophied because of my injury. It makes it so board sports and balancing sports are really difficult for me now. Difficult, not impossible! I’m determined to learn the foil board next! Mark my words! Thanks to everyone that encouraged and cheered me on!
