Good nutrition is one of the biggest drivers of long-term health. In Wisconsin, about 67% of SNAP (FoodShare) recipients are also enrolled in Medicaid, meaning many of the same individuals receiving food assistance are also receiving publicly funded healthcare. Diet-related illnesses like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are some of the leading causes of chronic health problems in the United States, and sugary drinks and highly processed foods are major contributors. Right now, around 11% of SNAP spending goes toward soda and candy, even though the program was created to help families access nutritious food. Assembly Bill 180 takes a simple step to improve health outcomes by directing Wisconsin to seek a federal waiver so FoodShare benefits cannot be used to purchase soda, candy, or energy drinks. The bill does not reduce benefits or change eligibility—it simply ensures the program better supports healthier food choices. When two-thirds of recipients are also on Medicaid, nutrition policy becomes healthcare policy. Encouraging healthier purchases can help reduce chronic disease, improve quality of life, and lower long-term healthcare costs for taxpayers. Helping families access food should also mean helping them access healthy food.

At the State of the Union, Donald Trump said his administration “lifted 2.4 million Americans off food stamps.” The room cheered. But let’s define terms. “Food stamps” refers to SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. To qualify, your gross income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty line. That is: $15,960 per year for one person. About $33,000 per year for a family of four. So when we say 2.4 million were “lifted,” we are talking about people earning near or below poverty-level wages losing food assistance. Is that economic growth? Or is that shifting hardship off the federal budget and onto working families? Food assistance is not luxury spending. It is grocery money. Policy language matters. Applause lines matter. But math matters more. Look up the poverty guidelines. Read the SNAP eligibility rules. Ask who benefits — and who absorbs the loss. Economic policy is not abstract. It shows up in kitchen cabinets. While food banks are essential to combating hunger, the fight goes beyond the food bank network. Government programs like SNAP provide assistance on a scale 9 times larger - an impact threatened by the 2025 Congressional bill H.R. 1. Hear more from Eddie Oliver, Executive Director of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, on what the impacts of this bill will be on Virginia in this episode of CommonHealth.

Free breakfast and lunch in school. That’s what Democratic senators wanted for Wisconsin kids.⁣ ⁣ But the “Healthy School Meals for All” proposal was blocked by Assembly Republicans… again.⁣ ⁣ Democratic Sen. Sarah Keyeski of Lodi and others introduced the legislation to reduce family food costs, eliminate hunger-related stigma, and support local farmers by funding universal, nutritious meals amidst historic cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) under President Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” last summer.⁣ ⁣ Blockage of the legislation comes as the majority-Republican House Agriculture Committee advanced a new Farm Bill that doesn’t reverse those cuts.⁣ ⁣ As a result, millions more people could go hungry—many of them children.⁣ ⁣ SNAP cuts will also strip children of school food assistance. When families lose SNAP benefits now, their kids also lose automatic eligibility for free and reduced meals at school.⁣ ⁣ Having to apply directly for school meals increases the administrative burden on schools and forces families to tackle complex paperwork.⁣ ⁣ The Healthy School Meals for All act would have provided critical help, but this marks the third straight legislative session where Republicans refused to even bring it up for a vote.⁣ ⁣ ✏️: Salina Heller

ICYMI: During Farm Bill markup, I offered an amendment to allow SNAP recipients to use benefits for hot foods. Currently, items like rotisserie chicken, soup & other prepared foods are ineligible for purchase with benefits. This outdated policy can make the difference between a family going hungry.
