How much protein should women eat? The answer is: it depends. As women, our protein needs aren’t one-size-fits-all — they depend on your activity levels, age, life stage, and goals. For my active girls in their reproductive years — no matter which era you’re in: gym girlie, Pilates princess, my marathon queens — research shows that 1.4–1.8 g per kg of body weight per day (depending on your level of activity) is a better range for us. This supports muscle repair, recovery, and overall performance, without tipping into excess. Oh, and our cycle changes things too: In our luteal phase, protein breakdown increases slightly. This means we can often benefit from being extra mindful of protein intake in the two weeks before our period (e.g. have an extra snack with protein during this time). For other life stages: Pregnancy: Needs jump up in the later stages to support your baby’s growth (and yours). An additional 6-10 g per day is currently recommended. Postpartum & breastfeeding: Requirements rise even higher because you’re literally making milk from your own nutrient stores. While recommendations for lactation vary, a review of peer-reviewed data suggests breastfeeding can demand an extra ~25 g/day of protein to support milk production and postpartum recovery.
