KENeurons forming connections
This time-lapse shows neurons growing in a culture dish as they extend long projections called neurites. These structures eventually develop into axons and dendrites, which allow neurons to communicate.
As the cells grow, they reach toward neighboring neurons and begin forming synaptic connections, the fundamental communication points of the nervous system.
In the brain, billions of these connections form the circuits that allow us to think, learn, and store memories.
Even in isolation, neurons retain their intrinsic drive to build networks.
