Even though 50 + 30 = 80 mathematically, S (Svedberg units) are based on sedimentation rate, not simple addition. When the two ribosomal subunits combine, their shape and mass change how they settle during centrifugation. That ‘S’ isn’t size or mass. It tells you how fast something sediments when you spin it really fast. Now here’s the catch...this settling speed depends on a lot of things. Not just weight, but also shape, density, and how much resistance it faces in the liquid. 👉 So: 50S (large subunit) 30S (small subunit) Together form 70S ribosome (found in prokaryotes like bacteria) When the 30S and 50S are separate, they behave differently. But when they come together, they don’t just add up...they form a more compact, efficient structure, which changes how they move in the centrifuge. This non-additive behavior is due to how molecules behave in solution—not just their size but also shape and density. So yeah… it’s not wrong math. It’s just that biology is measuring something completely different.

Acids and Bases can be defined in a lot of ways. Arrhenius Theory, which is the most traditional, is the idea that an acid increases the concentration of H⁺ ions when dissolved in water and that a base increases the concentration of OH⁻ ions when dissolved in water. This theory does not explain some things like why NH₃ is a basic substance, despite not having an OH⁻ ion in its structure. The Brønsted-Lowry Theory explains this by reclassifying acids and bases as : acids are substances that donate H⁺ and bases are substances that accept H⁺. Lewis Theory expands the definition of acids and bases beyond needing H⁺. A lewis acid is a substance that accepts a pair of electrons and a lewis base is a substance that donates a pair of electrons. Now things like BF₃ are considered lewis acids. Lewis acids are also called electrophiles and Lewis bases are also called nucleophiles. In this case the acid and base are likely based on the Arrhenius Theory. Acids and Bases will react with eachother and Neutral compounds to form other, lower chemical potential compounds. In the body, bases can dissolve proteins and fats, cause chemical burns and multiple organ failure. This will result in extreme damage and death if not treated immediately. Acids will also cause severe damage in the form of chemical burns, internal damage and multiple organ failure. Acids and Bases will neutralize eachother, resulting in a mixture of water and salt. This reaction is exothermic and will produce large amounts of heat energy. Attempting to do so with the human body will lead to thermal burns, in addition to chemical burns from both the acid and the base. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU INGEST A BASE! In reality the best thing to do is to stabilize the patient and assess the level of damage. Generally the patient will loose fluid from the wounds created and thus will need IVs to survive. The law being described in the meme is Newton's first law. It is often stated as "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." While this could be said as 'If you don't move something, it doesn't move', the real idea that it is attrempting to convey is the idea of inertia. Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes to it's motion. Mass is a measure of inertia. Due to this, when the same force is applied to different objects, the objects with greater mass will change their motion less than the objects with less mass. The exact way that this change of motion occurs is described by Newton's second law, which states that the acceleration due to a force on an object is in the direction of that force, directly proportional to that force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. This gives us a = k F/m, where a is acceleration, F is force, m is mass and k is a proportionality constant. The SI unit of force, the Newton (named after the man himself) is defined such that the proportionality constant k = 1. From this the law becomes a = F/m, which is often written as F=ma. Here F is the force in Newtons, m is the mass in kg and a is the acceleration in ms⁻². Newton's third law states that "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". This describes the fact that within a system, when one object interacts with another object, if object A applys a force F on object B in one direction, object B applies an equal force F in the opposite direction onto object A. The net internal force within that system is zero. These three principles construct a system which can explain most of the behaviours we observe in the universe. While it doesn't explain some extreme circumstances on the macro/human scale and most circumstances on the quantum scale, it is quite useful for day to day predictions.
