If you’ve ever had beautiful seedlings suddenly fall over and die overnight, they probably damped off. It’s the biggest and most frustrating problem when starting seeds. Damping off is caused by soil fungi that attack fragile seedlings right at the soil line. Some plants are more susceptible to it than others. The stem weakens, the plant collapses, and unfortunately there’s no saving it once it starts. The key is prevention: • Use clean trays and fresh seed-starting mix (I use ProMix HP) • Bottom water instead of watering from above (I set trays in water for about 20 minutes, then pour the extra into a bucket to reuse later) • Provide airflow. A small fan helps a lot • Remove humidity domes immediately after germination • make sure seedlings get strong light • let soil dry slightly before watering again Seedlings are delicate in their first few weeks, but good airflow and careful watering go a long way toward growing strong, healthy plants! #seedstarting #gardeningtips #greenhouselife #flowerfarmer

I was skeptical about seed snails until I tried them. Now I am fully converted. Popularized by @faridasober , this method completely changed my seed starting game. Not only did I fit 240 tomato seedlings into just two standard trays, but the plants were undeniably healthier than anything I grew in standard cells. The secret is the deep root space combined with minimal soil surface area. It naturally prevents overwatering and keeps fungus gnats away. What are you growing in seed snails this year? #seedsnails #seedstarting #gardeningtips #growfromseed #indoorgardening

The number one thing I see beginner gardeners doing 🙈 that breaks my heart a little 💔, is starting to seed or plant too early! All that effort and excitement only to watch their plants struggle, and possibly even die from lack of space and natural sunlight. When it comes to seed starting, timing is everything! So, here are some tips 👇 to improve your chances of success by starting at the right time for your unique climate: ⭐️ In general, the only thing you should be starting in January or early February is herbs and some flowers - unless you live in a year-round warm climate ⭐️ Start anything edible 6-8 weeks before your outdoor planting date - unless you have a season extension like a greenhouse. Otherwise, you may get stuck with overgrown plants looking for more space to grow, before it’s actually safe to plant them outdoors. ⭐️ Start COOL Season veggies first - kale, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, onions - as they will be the first to be planted outdoors. ⭐️DO NOT start large WARM Season veggies - zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, sunflowers, even tomatoes - in the middle of winter, unless you have a greenhouse. These plants germinate quickly and get big FAST, and will not tolerate extended periods under artificial lighting. Instead, start these plants about 4-6 weeks before your expected last frost date. ⭐️ Start tomatoes and peppers roughly 12-14 weeks before your last frost date if you have somewhere to keep them growing as they expand. If not, focus your efforts on growing plants that can be planted outdoors within 6-8 weeks from the seeding date, and consider buying your tomatoes and peppers from the garden store. ⭐️ Watch for signs of yellowing leaves, and stunted growth indicating that it’s time to transplant into a bigger pot. If the next pot size up cannot fit under your grow lights and it’s not time to plant outdoors yet, it means you started too early ☹️ If you’re unsure of what the safe “planting out dates” are in your climate, follow me here as I break these confusing timelines down with a simple and super easy-to-apply method no matter where you’re growing! #yycgardening #seedstarting #zone3 #urbangardening

Milk jug greenhouses, refined after 3 years of trial and error 🌱 This is how I start seeds outdoors every winter without grow lights or constant monitoring. Each year I tweak the process to make it easier and more reliable. Grow Cucumbers in Eggshells 🥚➡️🥒 The Smart Seed-Starting Hack! Don’t throw away eggshells — they can become the perfect natural starter pots for your plants 🌱 Here’s how this simple hack works: 🥚 Step 1: Prepare the eggshells Carefully crack the top of the egg and keep the shell intact. Rinse them lightly and let them dry. 🌱 Step 2: Add soil Fill each eggshell with seed-starting soil. 🌾 Step 3: Plant the seeds Place one seed in each shell and cover lightly with soil. 💧 Step 4: Water gently Keep the soil moist but not soaked. 🌿 Step 5: Let them grow In a few days, seedlings will start to appear. 🌍 Step 6: Transplant directly When ready, plant the whole eggshell into the soil — just crack it slightly so roots can grow out. The shell will break down and feed the plant with calcium. ♻️ Natural. 💰 Free. 🌱 Perfect for cucumbers, zucchini, and many other plants. Sometimes the simplest ideas grow the strongest plants. #GardenHacks #GrowYourOwnFood #SeedStarting #DIYGarden

Seed starting does NOT need to be complicated so I’m sharing as many tips as I can for easy success. Learning to start from seed is easily one of the best ways to save money with gardening. As an example, a 6 pack of zinnia plugs from a nursery might cost $6.00, but you can find 50-100 zinnia seeds for the same amount. It also is incredibly rewarding and will open the door to so many more varieties that just can’t be found at nurseries! And finally, it will mean that you get a head start and get to see flowers bloom for longer each year! Four things are vital: Light, soil, seeds, and containers (I’ll have a list of flowers that do great direct-sown at the end!) Greenhouses are not necessary. I didn’t use one for years, but they can be nice if you’re starting enough for a farm. But for a garden? Definitely not needed. One utility shelf will hold a whole bunch of seedlings! Back when I grew less, I would just set this up in my house to take advantage of the house temperature. Light is essential. Window light is almost never enough. For best results, grow lights are a good investment. And any type will work: they do not need to be expensive. The key primarily is that they are 2-3 inches above the tops of your seedlings: this makes sure your seedlings don’t get leggy. As a side note: if your seedlings are leggy, it’s because they don’t have enough light. 💐 Seeds: All seeds have different requirements and usually all needed information will be included with a seed packet. I have also found that certain websites contain a LOT of growing information and needs about each flower on their websites. Johnny’s Seeds is a favorite resource of mine because they do this (they also have great seeds!). Soil: The type of soil doesn’t make or break your seedlings usually, but you can use better soil for better success. Floret Flower Farm recently shared a soil recipe that has incredible results and that’s my current favorite. Easy to do, and easy to source! Water: Getting your soil pre-damp before you sow seeds is hugely beneficial! After that, lightly watering as the top of the soil dries slightly is important. Continued in comments! . . . . . #seedstarting #flowers

Last year I tested using toilet paper rolls in the garden to protect my squash. I was tired of the chipmunks and the squirrels stealing my seeds and seedlings. I was constantly having to replant. I pushed the roll about 1” into the soil, dropped my seeds in, topped them with a little more soil, and watered. It worked beautifully- keeping chipmunks and squirrels away during those early stages when they love them most. This year, I’m upping my game and putting even more seeds to the test. I’m trying it with cucumbers, sweet peas, garden, peas, and sunflowers Stay tuned! New here?
