Selective mutism is not shyness. It’s an anxiety-based communication response. Many autistic girls are called “shy” because their silence is misunderstood. Not shy. Overlooked autism. #SelectiveMutism #AutisticGirls #AutismAwareness #NeurodivergentKids #ActuallyAutistic

Life happens outside of your comfort zone. As a kid I had episodes of selective mutism, when the words wouldn’t come out no matter how hard I tried. Coupled with frequent panic attacks, I thought that my anxiety meant that I would live life in isolation. One thing I’m glad about is that I didn’t give up on myself. I kept trying, failing, getting frustrated and then try another way. The road gets less scary as you walk it. So walk 🤍

REPOST from @maistorybooklibrary on Instagram: Empathy, visibility, and representation are protective factors for students with learning and thinking differences. Empathy helps students feel understood and not alone. Visibility validates their experiences and reduces isolation. Representation breaks stereotypes and builds confidence, showing them they too can succeed. Together, these create classrooms where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive. There were times when I wanted to speak… but the words just wouldn’t come out. 🗣️ That’s when I learned about selective mutism and how it often shows up in autistic people like me. For years, I thought I was “shy” or “socially awkward,” but the truth is different. Selective mutism isn’t a choice — it’s when your brain literally locks up because of anxiety, sensory overload, or feeling unsafe in certain environments. It’s like your autistic brain hits the mute button, even when you know what you want to say. This can happen at school, at work, around strangers, or even with family. And it can make you feel frustrated, isolated, and misunderstood. I’ve learned ways to manage it: ✅ Safe scripts for stressful situations ✅ Non-verbal communication tools ✅ Building environments where my brain feels safe enough to speak If you’ve ever experienced this, you’re not broken — your brain is protecting you. Understanding how autism and selective mutism connect was life-changing for me, and it can be for you too. 💙 👇 COMMENT “BRAIN” below and I’ll send you my free Bulletproof Autistic Brain Starter Kit — packed with tools to help you manage overwhelm and build confidence. 🧠⚡ #SelectiveMutism, #AutismLifeHacks, #NeurodivergentSupport, #AutismAndAnxiety, #AutisticCommunication, #OvercomingSelectiveMutism, #AutismCommunity, #ADHDAutismLife, #NeurodivergentLife

@zeebratherapy
As a speech and language therapist specialising in autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent profiles such as selective mutism, these are four things I would start doing straight away if I suspected my child was masking at school. 1. Trust your parental instinct: If something feels off, pay attention to it. Parents hold longitudinal, cross-context insight that no professional setting can replicate. You see the impact on your child’s wellbeing, energy, and emotional load across days, weeks, and environments. Instinct is not emotion replacing evidence. It is often the first indicator that something needs closer attention. 2. Keep brief, objective observations: I would keep short, factual notes to track patterns over time. This could be in your phone notes, a WhatsApp message to yourself, or on paper. Notice: • mornings versus evenings • weekdays versus weekends • start of term versus end of term • presentation after school Keep notes concise and neutral. The aim is to identify patterns of overload, shutdown, meltdown, or burnout, alongside what appears to support regulation and recovery. This is far more reliable than memory when speaking with professionals. 3. Collaborate with school using focused observations: Rather than asking staff to notice everything, I would agree one specific area to observe at a time over a set period. For example: • social interaction during break and lunchtime • classroom participation and response to feedback • rule-following, compliance, or perfectionism This respects staff capacity and builds shared understanding based on observation rather than assumption. 4. Align understanding around masking and camouflage: Parents and school staff need a shared framework. This includes understanding what masking can look like, why it differs across environments, and how it can affect wellbeing over time. This is a starting point. The focus is gathering evidence across settings and keeping the child at the centre of reflection before drawing conclusions. I hope this is helpful 🫶 Emma 🦓 #camoflauging #masking #autistic #autisticgirl #autismparents

One of my favourite PINK songs I love learning BSL, I'm doing it properly through a company and currently working on my 102 exam which is exciting learning more and more each week but I do love to come and do a bit of SSE here and there. I look forward to the day I can sign songs in BSL grammar order though. Why am I learning BSL? well, I did it as an extra curricular in school and fell in love with it, always wanted to do it again but never had the time but since leaving hospital I knew I wanted to learn it, because I'm hospital I went mute for a month with my selective mutism so I had to teach myself BSL (but used it in SSE so people had a better chance of understanding me) and I fell in love with the language. I have always found it so weird that we live in a country where it's compulsory in many schools to teach foreign languages when we have a whole community of people in our own country that we can't speak their language and it's been a dream of mine to be able to communicate with the deaf community and other people who can't speak for whatever reason. And on a personal level, with my chronic fatigue I find speaking hard sometimes so I resort to using sign and when I'm in autistic burnout I do too. I also never know when I'm going to enter a selective mutism episode and how long it will last. Last time I was totally unprepared and so were the people around me. When I was signing and they couldn't be bothered to try and understand me and just told me to write it on my phone I realised and it made me so angry and hurt that they wouldn't even try to understand the language I was using and I couldn't have a proper conversation over message and people always misinterpret what I say over message because with my autism I come across super blunt over message and the tone gets completely misinterpreted. I can't even begin to comprehend how people who use sign as their first language feel all the time when I felt so shunned for that month. *PSA* I checked this with my teachers before posting and they said it was okay - BSL has different dialects so not all signs are the same and I'm not perfect!!! #bsl #sse #britishsignlanguage #signlanguage #sign

I use this quick screening to identify for a potentially retained Fear Paralysis Reflex in my clinic. PLUS a screening checklist for symptoms of a retained FPR completed by the caregiver. These two things can give me a pretty clear picture of this reflex! Signs your child may have a retained FPR: ✅ Low self esteem and constant negativity ✅ Selective mutism ✅ “Freeze” response instead of fight or flight like the Moro reflex ✅ Perfectionism traits Integrating this reflex is also tricky, because the movements aren’t as fun or play based, like the Moro reflex activities or others. The FPR integrates into the Moro in utero around 8-12 weeks gestation, and it’s a protective reflex in case of trauma or an accident. Let me know if you want more information about this reflex or comment: IAC for a link to schedule a 1-1 session with me in person or virtually 🤍 #thesensoryproject #occupationaltherapy #sensory #pediot #primitivereflexes #otmom #reflexintegration #adhd #fearparalysisreflex #selectivemutism
