‘For me, there were two reasons: to see the king penguins that “own” the island, and to relive a great story that has inspired me to keep going in tough times. Ireland’s most famous explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean, famously arrived in South Georgia in a bid to save the crew of the ill-fated ship, Endurance… Shackleton is buried there.’

MAThis is Sir Ernest Shackleton’s “Nimrod” Hut at Cape Royds. Often just referred to as Shackleton’s hut, it is a site of extreme historic significance. So many firsts happened from or at this building.
Members of the team were the first to reach the summit of Mount Erebus, were the first to reach the south magnetic pole, and at the time, achieved the furthest south in their quest to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole.
The first book ever published in Antarctica was done from this hut… modern reproductions of “Aurora Australis” are still available for purchase today. Of the few originals that were produced, some are still around, but they are held in museums and private collections around the world.
The hut is much smaller than Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans, but supported 11 less people through the winter.
This was my first visit to the hut since 2017 so it was amazing to return. It’s much more difficult to get to than Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans because it involves traversing sea ice much further north. This is the pinnacle of our recreational trips that we get to do, just because of how logistically challenging it is to get there. Everyone wants to visit Nimrod Hut, and it’s easy to see why.

Filmed from onboard the National Geographic Explorer last December. Off of the coastline of Elephant Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Just out of shot on the left of the frame is the place where Shackleton and his men made camp after leaving the remains of their ship the Endurance, after it was wrecked by sea ice further south in the Weddell Sea.
In the picture you can see glacial ice debris calved off of the glacier front.
News broke this week of the discovery of Shackleton’s famous ship -The Endurance. With photographs showing the wreck with great clarity on the sea bed.

EUIrish polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship has been discovered in pristine condition in Antarctica over a century after it went missing ⛵
A team from the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust discovered the wreck at a depth of 3008 metres in the Weddell Sea, in an area identified as a likely location by the team before their departure from Cape Town and approximately 6.4km south of the position originally recorded by Captain Worsley.
“When the expedition discovered it, it was like a miracle,” said historian Dan Snow.
“We could not believe the state of the ship. There are no wood eating microorganisms, no little animals that feed on wood like there are elsewhere in the world's oceans, it's too cold.”
The voyage became legendary after the miraculous escape by Shackleton and his crew.
The team of 27 men and one cat survived by camping on sea-ice, before launching lifeboats and sailing to South Georgia Island, a British overseas territory.
Despite their hardships, all of the crew members survived - leading to acclaim upon their arrival back home in Britain.
