JOMoDOT Activates “The Ice Reaper” Amid Extreme Cold
As temperatures plunge to levels where traditional plowing and salt are struggling to melt snow, MoDOT has officially activated a new heat-based road-clearing vehicle known as The Ice Reaper.
The Ice Reaper is an absolute beast—featuring a heavy lift kit, 40-inch wheels, and heat-resistant tires specifically designed to handle extreme temperatures. Officials say the flames run intentionally close to the tires to keep them warm, a design choice that also helps melt ice directly beneath the vehicle.
When the vehicle was first unveiled, MoDOT briefly opened applications for an operator position.
The posting was quickly closed after a waitlist of 1,244 middle-aged men signed up, many citing “lifelong qualifications,” “owning a torch,” and “this being their moment.”
MoDOT says the system is operating as intended.
Snow is melting.
