VEWhere The Sound of Music ends, the real von Trapp story begins… 🦋✨
After escaping Austria during WWII, the von Trapps settled in the hills of Stowe. This stunning meadow in the mountains reminded them of Salzburg, so they purchased a farm in 1942 and later opened it as an inn. They also toured as a singing group and became pretty famous!
❄️ There’s an important detail that Hollywood missed… the von Trapps didn’t just flee during the war, they also fought in it. Rupert and Werner von Trapp (aka Friedrich and Kurt in The Sound of Music) were US soldiers in the elite 10th Mountain division. Werner vowed to build a chapel if they returned to Vermont.
Upon their safe homecoming in 1945, Werner and his family spent 3 years perfectly placing these stones behind their lodge. Sadly, Captain von Trapp passed away 2 years into the project and never saw it completed.
💫 Werner lived until he was 91 and instilled a deep love of music into his 6 children and many grandkids. His daughter, Elisabeth von Trapp, is a local music teacher and global performer. Five of his grandkids also formed The von Trapps and recorded folk songs Werner taught them, including this beautiful version of Edelweiss.
Werner’s stone chapel has become a beloved place of pilgrimage for our community. Many walk this trail to get engaged, exchange vows, honor lost loved ones, and relax in nature. I met a couple who said they’ve been visiting for 20 years, just to ring the bell and enjoy the sacred hill.
☃️ The chapel is hiding at @vontrappresort and it’s open to the public. Buy a trail pass at the Outdoor Center and follow the short (but steep!) path up the hill. Only snowshoes are allowed on this trail, which you can bring or rent from the Outdoor Center.

ANThis didn’t feel real! 🥹 I’ve seen The Sound of Music more times than I can count, so getting to walk through one of the most iconic filming locations felt so surreal.
This was filmed inside of the Basilika St. Michael in Mondsee, one of the stops on our Sound of Music tour. The town of Mondsee itself was so beautiful, we really wish we had spent more time there! So many stunning locations on this tour, and we’ll be sharing a longer video soon because there’s so much more to show.
