LA#TIpartner | @txinstruments | Space isn’t just harsh on humans. It’s harsh on spacecraft electronics too. Beyond the vacuum and extreme temperatures, spacecrafts are constantly bombarded by cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, and trapped radiation belts that can degrade or even destroy sensitive electronics.
From navigation and communication to power management and life support, every function in a spacecraft depends on reliable electronics. A single upset caused by high-energy particles can corrupt data, interrupt operations, or disable critical systems entirely. That’s why radiation tolerance and long-term reliability are so important.
Traditionally, radiation-hardened electronic components have been packaged in ceramic enclosures to provide maximum protection. While robust, these packages are bulky, heavy, and limit how much capability can fit onboard. As missions demand more computing power and advanced sensors in smaller, lighter spacecraft, engineers face increasingly tight size, weight, and power constraints.
Having studied the space radiation environment during grad school, I’ve seen how destructive high-energy particles can be to spacecraft, from single-event upsets to cumulative material degradation, and how crucial it is to design for reliability at every level, protecting the most critical components of spacecraft.
Texas Instruments, alongside other industry leaders, led the development of a new plastic packaging standard for space electronics, known as QML Class P. This innovation enables smaller, lighter, and more efficient electronic packaging without sacrificing the reliability needed for the harsh space environment.
