This isn't the most exciting drop spindle that I own but here's a little bit about spinning! Everyone has their own methods of hand spinning, but I work best with a top whorl spindle (the wooden disk). Once you learn it, it's pretty much muscle memory. Spinning is honestly such an amazing link to our past through our female ancestors. It was an extremely important skill to have and dates to at least the neolithic as we have archaeological evidence to support this. Flax was first domesticated an incredible 30,000 years ago! 🌱 I'm not an expert and don't know about every single culture but in Europe at least, pretty much every girl learnt how to hand spin from an early age, as textiles were an important cottage industry. This is where the phrase "Spinster" comes from. It was a skill many women were proficient in, however it did not pay well and was an undervalued source of labor. Spinning at home started to die out during the Industrial Revolution, but the craft still carries on in many rural communities around the world. 🧵 . . . #handspinning #traditionalcraft #sustainabletextiles #slowcraft #textiles #naturalfibres
