JA2 surgeries. 3 weeks. 2 plates. 19 screws.
I wasn’t going to let anything stop me.
Not when I was this close.
Let me take you back.
I ended 2016 starting my first game as a Boilermaker and got my first interception.
Then the entire coaching staff got fired.
New staff. New system. Back to square one.
They literally told me in a meeting:
“You’re not good enough to be the starter.”
They brought in someone else & promised him the job.
I was pissed.
I had come too far.
I wasn’t going to accept that.
I trained like a madman all winter.
Spring ball was my shot.
Practice 5 I go in for a tackle.
A teammate drills his helmet into my hand.
Crack.
I finish the drive. Make another tackle.
Then walk to the trainer:
“I think something’s wrong with my hand.”
He grabs both sides of the bone and wiggles it.
“You see that?”
Yeah.
“It’s not supposed to do that.”
X-rays confirmed: broken.
Surgery 2 days later: plate + 7 screws.
Two weeks later, I was back. Club on hand. Flying around.
Then came the scrimmage. One week before the spring game.
I was second string. Playing well.
Got rotated in with the starters.
“Here we go,” I thought. “My shot.”
Then a deflected ball goes up. I dive.
Interception. Land on my shoulder.
Crack.
I still caught it. Proud of that.
X-rays: spiral fracture in my collarbone.
Another surgery 2 days later: plate + 12 screws.
I missed the spring game. Lost time I couldn’t afford.
8 weeks to heal. 8 weeks to prepare for camp.
So I went to work.
2 hours a day. 7 days a week. All summer.
Fall camp, day 2: 2 picks.
Day 3: named the starter.
End of camp: earned my scholarship.
Week 1: I started in Lucas Oil Stadium vs Lamar Jackson.
I did it.
2 fractures. 2 plates. 19 screws.
It just made the story sweeter.
I’ve never shared this publicly until now.
But I hope it shows you…
You are more capable than you think.
You can handle more than you think.
You are more powerful than you know.
The only limits are the ones you place on yourself.
