PHGetting ready for spring gardening starts long before planting day. Here’s what to focus on now so you’re set up for a thriving garden:
1. Find Your Last Frost Date
This determines when it’s safe to move tender plants outside and sets the foundation for your whole spring schedule.
2. Take a Garden Class
Whether you sign up through your local extension office or take an online course, learning from experienced gardeners can give you valuable skills. Classes can help you understand soil, pests, planting times, and the “why” behind what you do in the garden.
3. Refresh Your Soil
Add compost or organic amendments to replenish nutrients. Healthy soil is the key to strong, productive plants.
4. Start Seeds Indoors (Late Winter)
Warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers need a head start.
For example, in Chicago the average last frost date is around April 21–30, so you’d start seeds indoors at least 8 weeks before that — typically late February to early March.
5. Map Out What You’ll Grow + Research It
Planning ahead helps you avoid overcrowding and understand each crop’s needs. Researching sunlight, spacing, and timing sets you up for success.
6. Shop Holiday Sales

FOGolden and Red Beet & Herb Goat Cheese Stacks!
Spring gardening and farmers markets have made me correlate beets with spring and earth. I am obsessed with roasted fresh beets! I roasted them in foil for about an hour at 400F until a knife just slides in! Used a flower cookie cutter to shape and piped some creamy herbaceous goat cheese I made whipping it with a little cream and newly picked herbs from my garden 🪴

ASSpring gardening is not much this year. I had installed 4 raised beds 6 years ago and they fell apart. Now I think I deserve to get a well-organized garden. It was so much hard work to get the beds installed, order top soil and compost, make trips to the garden beds, setting up the trellises, etc. it was such a good workout. The weather was welcoming. I just wanted to finish this task before it started raining tonight. I am just sitting on my bed after a day well spent at n the garden. I feel so accomplished!! How did your Sunday go?
