Overthinking usually isn’t a thinking problem. It’s an arousal problem. When the nervous system is keyed up, the brain shifts into threat detection. Thoughts loop because the system is scanning for safety, not because it’s trying to reach insight. The repetition is a regulation attempt, not a reasoning one. Crossing the midline does something useful. It engages both hemispheres and pulls attention into coordinated movement and sensation. That gives the nervous system new input that competes with the threat loop. The body has to track rhythm, space, left and right. That alone can lower arousal a notch. What it does not do is stop thoughts entirely or “solve” the content of overthinking. And it doesn’t work because it distracts you or forces positive thinking. It works because it shifts the state. When arousal drops even slightly, the grip of the thoughts loosens. #overthink #overthinking #stopoverthinking
