Alternating esotropia is a type of eye misalignment where the inward turn switches between the two eyes rather than affecting just one. When one eye is covered, the other straightens to fixate, and the pattern reverses when coverage switches. Because both eyes are used at different times, this can lower the risk of severe amblyopia, but depth perception and binocular vision can still be affected. Management depends on the cause and may include glasses, patching, vision therapy in selected cases, or eye muscle surgery when alignment remains significant. Early evaluation helps guide the right approach.
