QUOn this day,April 4, 1968, at 6:01p.m.CST, Dr. King was fatally shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had been supporting a sanitation workers' strike.
He was 39 years old and was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital at 7:05 p.m..
The assassination sparked riots and urban rebellions in over 100 American cities, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Chicago.
The perpetrator, James Earl Ray, was later captured and pleaded guilty.
The Lorraine Motel is now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum, which holds an annual commemoration on this date.
