JANutrition cannot be an afterthought during treatment. It is one of the most powerful ways to not only help prevent cancer, but also make you feel better during an active cancer battle.
Doctors don’t study nutrition, so they don’t talk about it. I just did an interview with a medical student and she confirmed they still learn absolutely nothing about it in the oncology section she is currently in. In fact, it’s dismissed if asked about by a student. It’s crazy!
Your oncologist will likely tell you to eat “cheeseburgers and milkshakes if that’s all you can do during treatment”, just like mine did, and I can honestly say that is the worst advice I’ve gotten throughout this whole cancer journey.
Here are some ways that nutrition can play a vital positive role throughout treatment:
1) Nutrition can affect the way and how quickly your body bounces back in between treatments.
2) It can help increase your blood cell counts so you don’t have to push back necessary planned treatments.
3) It can reduce the need to stack more meds for nausea, GI Issues and fatigue.
4) it can help you spend less hours in the infusion chair by keeping you hydrated.
5) it can help you feel better overall, increase your energy levels, maintain a healthy weight, and support your cells that are working overtime.
Nutrition and treatment go hand in hand! Nutrition alone can’t fully heal your body, but it can definitely help.
