Most children think history is boring—just textbooks and memorizing dates. But that’s not how we study history. Charlotte Mason said, “History is the proper study of mankind.” There is a simple way to study history that is both rich and life-giving. In our homeschool, we follow a Charlotte Mason approach that helps children encounter the story of humanity through living books, narration, and three streams of history. We’ve found @alveary history curriculum to provide a rich feast of living ideas. Instead of memorizing facts, our children begin to see how people, nations, and events connect across time. They are building relationships with history—and this relational learning cultivates a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. I’ve included a chart to help you quickly reference the forms, history streams, tools, and types of books used along the way. If you’d like to go deeper into this subject, check out A Delectable Education to see how their timeline and history streams align. ✨ Save this for your homeschool planning. Some friends also shared how they study history in their homes—be sure to check them out: @juiceboxhomeschool @moraviapress @notebookingwithdelight @arrowsforchrist @livingideasplanner @hannahs_healthyhabits @aroundtheworld_homeschool #cmmhowwestudyhistory #charlottemasonhomeschool #livingbooks #charlottemasoneducation #homeschoolmom

If your homeschool feels chaotic, try combining instead of dividing. 🤍 7th–9th grade history — together. We’re walking through Early American History with @beautifulfeetbooks using a story-based rhythm: ✨ living books ✨ narration ✨ family-style discussion ✨ no dry textbooks When we gather instead of scatter, the room feels calmer. The conversation goes deeper. The pressure lifts. I get to watch my teens wrestle with big ideas, hear each other’s thoughts, and build respect across ages. It’s not just history, it’s heart formation. You don’t have to teach three separate grades to be doing it “right.” Sometimes the most peaceful homeschool is simply one sofa, good books, and time to think together. Week 7 of the History Solarium Time Capsule read-along: The Taking of Jemima Boone. I went in knowing almost nothing about this event. I came away with a much fuller understanding of frontier life in the 1770s—and how one abduction intersected with tribal nations, colonial expansion, and the Revolutionary War. #HistorySolarium #TheTakingOfJemimaBoone #FrontierHistory #AmericanRevolution #HistoryTeachers

Wait… history lessons that don’t end in tears or glazed-over eyes? 👀 Homeschooling littles + U.S. history can feel like a LOT. And if we’re honest? Bored kids = stressed parents. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here’s what’s worked beautifully in our home: ✨ Read it like a story, not a textbook. Historical fiction + powerful nonfiction = instant curiosity. ✨ Make it messy. Cook the food. Build the artifact. Act out the scene. ✨ Take virtual field trips. Museums, landmarks, cultural sites, no packing lunches required. ✨ Let them create. Comic strips. Short “documentaries.” Rewriting history from another perspective. ✨ Turn it into a game. Trivia nights, scavenger hunts, timeline challenges. History sticks when kids feel it. And when we center real people, real stories, and real voices? That’s when the magic happens. What’s one way you make history come alive in your homeschool? Drop it below, I’m always looking for new ideas 👇🏾 #wokehomeschooling #staywoke #homeschoolcurriculum #historylessons

Homeschool history has looked different at different times in our home over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is how much we’ve loved learning with The Good and the Beautiful. The stories, the beautiful lessons, and the way it brought history to life for my kids has made it such a gift in our homeschool. That’s why I came back to it this year with the newly revised history year 1. If you’ve been thinking about adding it to your homeschool this year, now is the time — the Early Bird Sale is happening! You can shop the sale through the link in my bio or my stories. 🤍 @thegoodandthebeautiful

🏛️ Bringing Learning to Life 🤍 We don’t just read about history in our home… we bring it to life. After reading about monuments, we turned it into a simple hands-on art activity—and it completely changed how the lesson felt. When kids can see it, touch it, and create it, they connect so much more deeply to what they’re learning. This is why we love combining books + creative activities—it makes learning meaningful (and memorable). It doesn’t have to be complicated—just take what you’re reading and add a simple hands-on element. 👇 Do you use unit studies in your home or homeschool? 💾 Save this for your next history lesson 📤 Share with a homeschool mama #homeschoolideas #unitstudy #learningthroughplay #homeschoollife #historyforkids

We have walked the path of homeschooling since kindergarten, treating history not as a race to fill a timeline, but as a slow journey through the tales of heroes. I’ve finally let go of the "burden of the books"—that nagging need to always catch up—and embraced the freedom Charlotte Mason championed. By allowing my children to choose for themselves what to draw or narrate, I’ve watched the "fact of having to choose" become the very heart of their education. In the beginning, the mountain felt too steep to climb. I feared the complexity of the past might overwhelm us. But staying the course has yielded such beautiful fruit. Our goal was never a collection of dry dates, but a mind nourished by living ideas. I am especially proud of Cate for completing the book Discovery of New Worlds by M.B. Synge, entirely on her own. To see her navigate such a rigorous text with confidence has been a true joy. We celebrated this milestone with her favorite meal—a small token for a massive achievement. Here are a few glimpses of her "History Keeping" journey so far and a few snippets of our celebration. "The imagination does not stir unless the mind is supplied with facts; but these must be living facts, not dry bones." -Charlotte Mason Home Education Vol. 1 l #llhkids #llhmom #homeschooling #historykeeping #charlottemasonhomeschool

If history feels boring, it’s not the story that’s the problem. It’s how it’s being taught. We dove into the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the events leading up to the American Revolutionary War. These aren’t just facts to memorize. They’re moments that shaped everything. So we slow it down… act it out… step into the story. Because when they feel it…they remember it! #homeschool #motherhood #homeeducation
