Most people think the fan blades at the front of a jet engine create all the power. But that is actually not the full story. 💡 On modern commercial aircraft engines like the CFM LEAP 1A, the large spinning fan is only one part of a much bigger system. These engines are called high bypass turbofans, and their design is surprisingly efficient. Around eighty percent of the thrust that moves the aircraft forward actually comes from cold air. The fan pulls in huge amounts of air and most of it flows around the outside of the engine core instead of going through the combustion chamber. This bypass air is what produces the majority of the thrust. Behind the engine panels there is a complex network of systems that most passengers never see. Fuel manifolds, hydraulic lines, oil systems, igniter plugs, and thousands of sensors all work together to keep the engine running smoothly. All of this is managed by FADEC, the engine’s onboard computer, which constantly makes small adjustments to keep everything operating efficiently during flight.
