One of the most remarkable discoveries? I was able to connect her dress to the moment she met her literary idol, William Makepeace Thackeray, in a private meeting at her publisher’s home in London. But cutting edge technology revealed far more. The fabric? Alpaca Orleans, a rare blend of alpaca and cotton, made just a few miles from her home in Haworth, meaning Charlotte was literally wearing a piece of home when she met Thackeray face to face. Most people think Madras checks are just a summer pattern. They’re not. They’re handwoven cotton from the Coromandel Coast of South India yarn-dyed, breathable, built for heat. The checks weren’t printed. They were structurally woven on looms. In the 1950s, when a shipment reached the United States and the natural dyes ran in the wash, brands didn’t hide it. They marketed it. “Guaranteed to Bleed.” Imperfection became authenticity. Fading became character. Time became part of the design. From Indian handlooms to West African ceremony to American Ivy style Madras didn’t change its name. It changed context. That’s the difference between a pattern and a textile legacy. Traditionally the motifs would’ve been sewn onto fabric first but I used wrapping paper which I do not recommend 😂 All of my other lace pieces were done on fabric which is so much easier to work with.
