To perfect that distorted way of speaking he had metal plates attached to his teeth with rubber. When that failed, he removed them. One of the film’s strangest and most revealing moments comes when Dodd drunkenly tells a story about a dragon he once kept as a pet — feeding it raw meat, only for it to eventually eat him. Beneath the humor, it’s a confession: the dragon represents Dodd’s own ego and hunger for power, the uncontrollable force he thought he had mastered but which ultimately owns him. It’s the film in miniature — about men trying to cage the wildness within themselves and losing in the process. The rubber bands weren’t strong enough to hold his mouth shut, so he removed them. But the metal plates, complete with screws that slightly cut up the inside of his cheek, were enough of a constant reminder that it allowed him to play that aspect of the character. After a few days of shooting, Paul Thomas Anderson noticed that Joaquin Phoenix would use the whole space where they were filming, even if it was outside the marks, so he told the lighting crew to have the whole space ready to follow Phoenix with the camera if necessary. #themaster #joaquinphoenix #amyadams #paulthomasanderson #philipseymourhoffman
