Tomorrow is international women’s day, a great time to bring up that the reality for women to run is not nearly the same as for men. When I first got into ultrarunning, a shock for me was seeing how little women were at the starting line. The stats show only 12-20% of sign ups are women. After running with this question for awhile, I think I can say the reason why is: 1. Women feel less empowered to do something they don’t know for sure they can finish 2. Training for ultras means hours after hours of training alone, which could be quite dangerous depending on location 3. The training schedule often don’t accommodate to typical demand of women in a household Also through traveling, I’ve seen how women in different countries simply don’t have access to a culture that celebrates them moving. But it doesn’t mean we’re not out here. Doesn’t mean we aren’t getting after it. Badass women like @courtneydauwalter @jasminparis_fellrunner @theultrarunnergirl @ultra_sophie and many others reminds us what is possible. But sometimes, it’s nice to have the reminder that gender shouldn’t create challenges for pushing boundaries, and we shouldn’t have to move our bodies differently because of it. These costume runs is a surprising reminder for the reality of that. Highly recommended as a therapeutic investment.
