Please respect the wildlife and maintain a safe distance. I briefly touched one for a few seconds because they kept following me, but I understand that keeping distance is important and will be more mindful next time. Here’s the story behind them: They’re not native wildlife. Most are descendants of pack animals brought to California in the 1800s during the Spanish and gold mining era. Over time, some escaped or were released and eventually formed herds in the mountains. They may not be fully wild in origin, but they’ve been part of Southern California’s landscape for generations.
