YOThe Maklakoff's method is a type of applanation tonometry used to measure intraocular pressure (IOP). A small, weighted metal disk (usually 10 grams) is placed on the cornea after applying local anesthesia. The disk flattens a small area of the cornea, leaving an imprint. The size of the imprint correlates with IOP: a larger area indicates higher pressure. The IOP is then calculated using a calibrated scale 📏.

A gentle touch on the eye… and a number appears.
This is tonometry, the test used to measure the pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP).
Why does it matter?
Because elevated eye pressure is one of the main risk factors for glaucoma, a disease that can silently damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss if not detected early.
During the test, a device called a tonometer measures how the eye responds to a very small amount of force applied to the cornea.
The measurement takes only a few seconds.
It’s quick, painless, and non-invasive, yet extremely valuable: it helps detect abnormal eye pressure and monitor patients over time.
Sometimes protecting vision starts with something very simple:

THGoldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT) is the gold standard for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), but it is susceptible to errors
Key Factors Causing Inaccurate GAT Readings:
Corneal Thickness (Central Corneal Thickness - CCT):
Thick Corneas : Falsely high IOP. Resistance to bending is higher, needing more force.
Thin Corneas: Falsely low IOP. Less resistance to bending.
Corneal Pathology/Surgery:
Edema (Swelling): Can cause a falsely low reading, even if the cornea is thick.
Scarring/Irregularity: Makes estimating the endpoint difficult.
Post-LASIK/Keratoconus: Typically produces thinner corneas, leading to lower readings.
Technical Errors:
Too Much/Little Fluorescein: Inadequate staining causes low readings, while excessive fluorescein causes high readings.
Lid Contact/Squeezing: If the patient squeezes their eyelids (blepharospasm) or if the technician applies pressure to the globe, the reading will be falsely high.
Incorrect Position: Holding the breath or excessive tilting of the head can affect accuracy.
Astigmatism:
High Corneal Astigmatism (>3

EXHere we are performing tonometry, which is an estimation of the intraocular pressure. 👀
In this case we are using a device called a TonoVet.
This method is so gentle that it does not require topical anesthesia - even without any numbing eye drops, the patient cannot feel it.
When performing Tonometry, make sure the animal is calm, and avoid applying pressure to the globe, eyelids, head, or neck, which can interfere with proper measurement.
The Normal range for dog IOP is considered from around 12 to 25
High pressures can be indicative of glaucoma.
